SSIC Section A – Agriculture and fishing

Companies in this section grow crops, raise animals, work in forests, or catch and farm fish and other water life.

Crop and animal farming covers vegetables, mushrooms, fruit, orchids, ornamental plants and other crops, and the rearing of cattle, goats, poultry, dogs, birds, bees and other animals. It includes farms that use soil, and farms that grow plants without soil, such as hydroponic and aquaponic farms. Organic farming and the growing of genetically modified crops and animals are also in this section.

The section also covers forestry and logging, sea and coastal fishing, and aquaculture, such as fish, prawn, mussel and seaweed farms and hatcheries. Firms that give support services to farms for a fee or on contract are included. Experimental farms whose main purpose is agricultural research are classified elsewhere.
