SSIC Section H – Transportation and storage

Companies in this section move people or goods from one place to another, or give services that support transport, such as storage, cargo handling and parking.

The section covers transport by rail, road, pipeline, sea and inland water, and air. The trips can be on a fixed timetable or arranged on demand, and the reason for the trip does not matter. Hiring out vehicles, ships or aircraft together with a driver, crew or pilot is also part of this section, as are postal and courier services.

Support activities form a large part of the section. These include warehouses and cold stores, car parks, ports, airports and bus or rail terminals, cargo handling, freight forwarding and ship agencies. Work such as packing, crating or weighing goods is classified here only when a company does it for other businesses, not as a part of its own transport service.
