SSIC Section J – Publishing, broadcasting, and content production and distribution activities

Companies in this section create, publish, broadcast or distribute content such as books, news, software, films, music, and radio and television programmes.

Publishing means that a company gets the copyright to content, or the right to use it, and makes it available to the public in print, digital or other form. A publisher can distribute the content itself or license others to do so. The section covers books, newspapers, magazines, directories and software, and self-publishing. Making and leasing copyrights for published content is also included.

The section also covers the production and distribution of films, videos, television programmes and sound recordings, and music publishing. Radio and television stations that put together and broadcast full channels are here, as are streaming and download services for content that they do not publish, news agencies, social networks, blogs, wikis and online gaming sites.
